Chromeography is dedicated to the chrome logos and lettering affixed to vintage automobiles and electric appliances — those unsung metal emblems and badges that are overlooked, forgotten, damaged, lost to time or the dump. The site is simply an interactive gallery you can explore by make/model, decade, color, and lettering style. There are also tags for emblems which are not on cars but appliances and gadgets like refrigerators and cameras. So go ahead and bask in the gleam....
The announcement that Google Books now houses in its digital archives over 1,860 issues of LIFE magazine sent me immediately to the search box on a quest for mid-century related articles. The first result was this piece on the Eames House published on September 11, 1950, just five years after Charles and Ray made their indelible mark on American design with their popular furniture.

Because they practiced design in the purest sense: they solved the problem through innovation and relentless testing.
Tiny, resolute German-born cafe owner Magdalena Åström is very much aware of the fact that Konditori Valand, in Stockholm’s “Surbrunnsgatan”, is a national treasure. Her Swedish husband Stellan designed the interior himself in 1954, and absolutely nothing has been changed since then: the dark beautiful “Royal Boards” covering the walls, well used tables and chairs made of teak, a unique black stonefloor imported directly from Italy.
After years of admiring photographs of his work and acquiring books and pillows , I finally got to visit two of his physical masterpieces in the flesh: The Compound Restaurant and the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe. Girard deserves a much deeper article than I have time to write, but I'll just start with the fact that he truly mastered multiple disciplines, from lettering to illustration to objects to interiors to exhibition design , all in a signature style that was warm and human and perfectly imperfect.

It’s not entirely my flavor of modern (the drapes and bedroom furniture are remnants of 50s americana) but there are many modern details such as the walls of glass, the built-in woodwork and room divider, the fireplace, and the pedestal chairs.
Ib Geertsen is the grand old man of Danish abstraction, but was little known in the UK until he was championed by London's Rocket Gallery in a recent group show with other Danes associated with an abstract movement known as Konkrete. ... He trained as a gardener rather than an artist, but came to prominence as a painter in the 1950s with other Konkrete artists, and pursued with them a distinctive hard-edged, geometric abstract language which arguably pre-dated comparable developments in America.
