Motel Room Postcards of the 1950s and '60s
Amid some ill-considered carpets and drapes , the motel interiors pictured in Roadsidepictures’ glorious set of postcards do feature a few bright spots. To wit, clockwise from top left: Saarinen-esque table and chairs bring sophistication to an otherwise banal space; a daring color scheme contrasts warm wood paneling with cool blue; a homey, modern sitting area transforms a motel room into a living room; and simple wall-mounted lighting is a tasteful alternative to bulky bedside lamps.

Objectified: A Film About Product Design

Boby Trolley by Joe Colombo for Bieffeplast
Design Museum says: Rather than simply modernising existing types of furniture, Colombo was intent on reinventing them as new concepts which would be better suited to a mobile, fluid late 1960s lifestyle. ... The following year he produced the Man-Woman Container, a futuristic version of a 19th century trunk, in which rails, shelves, drawers and mirrors are stashed inside two cupboards: one for a man, the other for a woman.

Moody Mid-Century, Modern
For our last holiday photography of 2008 I had to post these dramatic interior shots by Michael Pfleghaar. The subject matter is definitely mid-century (Eames plastic armchairs, bullet planter, vintage roll curtain) but taken with an iPhone, the images truly emphasize the “modern” half of our Flickr group ’s name.
